Diners rolled into The Bernice Garden shortly after the food trucks arrived for the first 2013 SoMa Food Truck Thursday on March 14. Some were still there as the last trucks were readying to roll out.

Good food and a good time were had by all – even though some had to settle for a second choice as diners outnumbered dishes in some cases. (Next time, the vendors plan to bring more of everything, so no worries.) Face-painting for the little ones added to the fun.

The variety of options makes Food Truck Thursday perfect for a couple in a mixed marriage, like Dauphne Trenhom and Jason Hale – he’s a carnivore, she’s not. While Dauphne ordered her roasted red pepper and asparagus wrap from Green Cuisine, Jason ambled on over to TheFoodTruck to order a reuben sandwich served with fresh-fried sweet-potato chips.

Hubby and I had to scoot over to the Oxford American for a meeting, so after visiting with friends and neighbors for a bit, we split a heavenly grilled brie, pear and apricot jam sandwich, with the aforementioned chips (of which I ate most, I will admit), with the intention of coming back for dessert or more after the meeting.

The “more” wasn’t much of an option by the time the meeting finally adjourned, as happy, hungry diners had scarfed up most of the food by the time we got back (just after 7:30). Luckily for us, the Sugar Shack still had a very few whoopie pies left – all their other sweets were sold out.

(Word to the wise: Always order dessert first!)

We had a choice of chocolate chip or s’mores pies – two s’mores were left, fortunately, because that’s what we both wanted. We did some more scarfing of our own and left happy.

Open-air dining, delicious food, a beautiful setting and good company. That’s life at the Garden in SoMa.

If you missed this one, don’t despair; you have SoMany more chances. Mark your calendars for the second Thursday of each month for as long as the weather holds.

Early diners lined up at Southern Gourmasion and Clyde and Kiddo’s.
