If you’re looking for someplace special to take your sweet Mom this Mother’s Day, you need look no further than The Bernice Garden Farmers’ Market at Daisy Bates and Main.

The first Mother’s Day Strawberry Festival on Sunday, May 12, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. should make any mother and her children happy (from toddlers to adults with kids of their own), with fun activities and culinary delights for all ages.

Fresh, sweet strawberries from Barnhill Orchard (pictured above) and North Pulaski Farms will be available for purchase, along with the regular market goodies.

But you don’t have to wait until you get home to make your own strawberry yummies. Boulevard Bread will dish up strawberry shortcakes, whoopie pies, and other strawberry treats on the spot.

Free handmade, recipe-covered fans will make fine old-fashioned souvenirs, and children can color themselves happy with strawberry coloring pages at the children’s table. And if it’s happening at The Bernice Garden, you can bet you’ll hear some sweet sounds, too, both music and happy voices.

If you come early, you’ll still have time to do the Quapaw Quarter Association’s 49th Spring Tour of Homes. Or go to church and come by afterward – either way, it will only enhance your day.

Bernice Garden Strawberry Pie

3/4 cup sugar

2 tablespoons cornstarch

1 cup water

1 package (3 ounces) strawberry gelatin

4 cups sliced fresh strawberries

Fresh mint

1. Line unpricked pastry shell with a double thickness of heavy-duty foil. Bake at 450° for 8 minutes. Remove foil; bake 5 minutes longer. Cool on a wire rack.

2. In a saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch and water until smooth. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Remove from the heat; stir in gelatin until dissolved. Refrigerate for 15-20 minutes or until slightly cooled.

3. Meanwhile, arrange strawberries in the crust. Pour gelatin mixture over berries. Refrigerate until set. Garnish with mint if desired
