Telephone Poles
The telephone poles and elevated chain-link fences at the Bernice Garden embody the artist’s aspiration for transcendence. These cast aside poles once elevated the wires that transported our voices. This discarded chain link fencing, whose intended purpose was to prohibit entry, avoids the scrap heap only through artistic salvation.
Perhaps this place suggests humanity will attain a consciousness that renders phones, fences and cages unnecessary? The poles and fencing held aloft remind us that interaction is meant to be fluid, organic and present.
Grid-less.
As time passes, the vines that grow beneath the poles and fences above Bernice Garden will assume a position of foundation beneath them. Maybe the Bernice Garden is a good place for us to remember how to be and what to do.
