Sculpture Concept:
Kursilimapuluhlima is a sculptural chair composed of recycled materials. The chair is an extension of the artist’s long time adventure with chairs as both an art and functional object. From top to bottom, Kursilimapuluhlima is comprised of playful characteristics utilizing discarded objects and materials. The gleaming coffee percolators and teapots paired with columns of plastic plugs simulate hair. The same plastic plugs coupled with black rubber diving fin create webbed feet.

With a lighthearted addition of color, the chair embodies the artist’s intent and fascination with the figurative qualities and concepts of sitting. Kwendeche’s intent is to provide both a functional and artistic object for the Bernice Garden. It is his intent to invite visitors to regard the repurposed components and their historical significance, as well as provide a chair to sit and enjoy the “quaint and unique place on South Main.”

“As an architect, I am quite intrigued by the seemingly endless flow of new “green” products, not only for the building industry but as well for all aspects of our current lifestyle on this planet. Although I’m supportive of this stream of new ideas and products, I much better appreciate in my artwork what has been around for decades rather than something new.”
